big bolts
So I got to this point in the disassembly and I decided to take the clutch cover off. There are some big bolts to get to under the clutch and also under the oil pump that are just so much easier to do while the engine is still in the frame. If you were not going to split the cases and just doing a top end for example, then you may want to skip this step. I need to get into the transmission which requires removing the clutch and oil pump to get the the bolts that hold those respective shafts in place. If you take the engine out then try to get those off its just more work. I've done that before but you almost need two people in that case. One to hold the engine on the bench while you also hold the engine and operate the wrench. So its just easier to do while its still in the frame.

1987 XR200R
My XR has been a great bike. I love how simple most everything is on it. Its a good starter bike and tough enough to handle some serious trail riding. Although its been great, its not been without its maintenance woes.
Soon I will be tearing into the engine. It runs great but this time its the transmission. On a trail ride I was on recently I lost 3/4 gears. It would shift into 1,2 and 5,6 but it was as if 3/4 were gone. I suspect a shift fork, but I won't know until I get into it. I plan on making a video of the complete teardown.
In another part of the blog I will be adding still pictures while I work on editing the video. Each new post will have some good information.
If your going to get into your XR200R innards this blog may help you. I will be covering special tools and best techniques for disassembly. I hope you enjoy and thanks for reading my blog.
